The potential of a home modification strategy – a universal design approach to existing housing.
Most homes pre-date any understanding of universal design and consequently they have been designed and construted without considering these principles. Newly built housing is also not including universal design features due to the voluntary nature of applying the Livable Housing Guidelines to private dwellings. Hence almost all housing stock is inaccessible to a significant proportion of the population. This paper discusses the preliminary findings of a research project investigating the value of home modifications to occupants and the potential to support the changing social needs of Australia’s ageing population. It was presented at the 2013 Universal Design Conference in Lund, Sweden.
