UberASSIST and Uber for deaf drivers

uberUber has received much publicity and is proving popular with the public. They have upgraded their services to include people with disability, and drivers who are deaf or hard of hearing. In rural areas where transport options are limited, this service could make a world of difference to people wanting to get out and about. Many of their drivers are retirees.

Riders who need an extra hand on their trip can now request the uberASSIST option on the mobile app. UberASSIST drivers receive specific training to help people who have different access needs. They can accommodate folding wheelchairs, walkers, and collapsible scooters. However, vehicles do not have specialised equipment such as accessible ramps or lifts.

The updated Uber app  for iOS and Android includes information specifically for deaf and hard of hearing driver partners. This removes communication barriers between drivers and passengers. It also creates earning opportunities for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Johann and Peter are deaf and explain what it means to be a Uber driver and how they connect with riders in this YouTube video.
