The Australian Network for Universal Housing Design and Rights and Inclusion Australia have made a joint submission to advocate for changes in the Australian building code to mandate accessible housing design. The submission is to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs who are seeking submissions on delivery outcomes under the National Disability Strategy 2010-2020 to build inclusive and accessible communities.
You can download the Australian Network for Universal Housing Design (ANUHD) and Rights and Inclusion Australia (RIA) submission if you are also interested in advocating for accessible housing. While this submission is quite formal and contains many academic references, your submission can be a personal one on just one page. If you quote any part of this submission, please reference it.
The Standing Committee has also produced an Easy English version of the instructions on how to submit, so they will be expecting some Easy English submissions! Remember the topic is broad ranging and covers anything that is about inclusive and accessible communities. The closing date for submissions is 17 March 2017.
The ANUHD and RI submission is also a good reference for the history of why we still don’t have accessible housing as standard in Australia including some of the responses from politicians.
