At the inaugural Australian Universal Design Conference in 2014 Chris Nicholls shared with us the features of his new family home and why he chose them. His story includes the struggles to get the builder to understand what he was asking for and how he overcame them. For anyone involved in home modifications there are some really good points. For everyone else, there are features to consider in any future renovation just for ease of use. This is The House that Chris Built.

Synopsis: Chris discusses the design and construction of his family home from the perspective of a wheelchair user. He outlines some of the problems with applying standards such as AS1428.1 in homes and explains why some design features, which are often referred to as disability features, are not necessarily needed by every wheelchair user or person with a disability. He also explains which features were important and why. The slideshow has many instructive photographs.
