picture of empty classroom showing wooden desks and a small blackboardThis is good news all round and shows what can be achieved through the government procurement process. All new schools in the state of Victoria will not only need to be sustainable and minimise maintenance, they will also need to be designed around the principles of universal design. The article from Fifth Estate explains in more detail.

picture showing a zig zag concrete ramp with blue railingsA second article on this topic focusing on the universal design principles was found in Sourceable. Unfortunately, the picture chosen to go with the article shows an ugly ramp to depict inclusion. However, inclusion cannot be easily identified as it is implicit in good design, not explicit such as in a ramp. But pictures such as these only serve to perpetuate the idea that inclusion is just another name for wheelchair access.
